UK Climate Change Risk Assessment

The UK Government has published the UK Climate Change Risk Assessment. This is the  first assessment of its kind to take place in the UK and will be the first in a 5 year cycle. The outputs of the assessment have been extensively peer reviewed and work will now begin to develop the UK's National Adaptation Programme.

The Climate Change Risk Assessment collected evidence in eleven different 'sectors' or research areas, including a sector on health. A background sector report describes the range of potential risks in each sector. This is followed by a detailed analysis of selected risks that were deemed to be most pressing. Dr Sotiris Vardoulakis, a visiting fellow with the network and with NCEPH, ANU, was a co-author to the health section of the report.

The sector analysis for health includes sections on temperature mortality; extreme weather events; summer air pollution (ozone); sunlight/UV exposure; the effect of floods and storms on mental health; extreme weather event injuries.
